A civil partnership is a legally recognised relationship between two people of the same sex. The civil partnership only exists once it is registered. Once registered it confers the same rights and responsibilities as marriage.
Since July 2013 same sex couples have been able to marry in England and Wales following a change in the law.
Couples who have entered a civil partnership can choose to convert their relationship to a marriage.
